The Crown and Castle is situated in the heart of Orford, a peaceful village just a few miles south of Aldeburgh, on the beautiful Suffolk coast.
There has been a hostelry on the site for eight centuries. The original inn was, apparently, built into the walls of the C12th Orford Castle but is now separated from it by a little lane. A highlight of a summer stay is sitting on the terrace, having a pre-prandial drink, and watching the sun go down behind the castle.
Co-owned by Ruth Watson, David Watson and Tim Sunderland, the Crown and Castle has 19-bedrooms and a lively bistro, the Trinity, which serves decent, unpretentious food. Although we are officially classed as a hotel, we tend to think of ourselves more as a restaurant with rooms, our public space being very limited. Our desire is to offer thoughtful, unstuffy service and to provide a truly relaxing, unstressed atmosphere. As such we do not take group bookings and are not suitable for guests attending local weddings. The Crown and Castle is open all year round for accommodation, lunch and dinner.
DOGS: we welcome a limited number of well-behaved dogs in the hotel, bar and restaurant so please be aware of this should you not like them.
CHILDREN: we welcome children of any age in the restaurant at lunchtime and those over 8 years old in the hotel and at dinner time so please be aware of this should you not like them.
